Where to Sell Luxury Jewelry in Santa Monica

Almost everyone who sets out to sell luxury jewelry in Santa Monica finds the same thing: very few buyers on the Westside will look at a signed piece across a counter and hand you a number the same day. South Bay Coin has done exactly that since 1980. We are a licensed, bonded, and insured California dealer in Lawndale, a GIA member, and we hold a 5.0 rating across more than 400 Google reviews.

The alternatives all ask you to give something up first. Traveling buyers meet you at your bank or your home. Appointment houses book you into a Beverly Hills office. The resale store on 26th Street takes a drop-off and returns a valuation days later. Each is a real option, and for one exceptional stone an appointment specialist may well be the better market. Each also moves your jewelry or your decision elsewhere before you know what the piece is worth.

We work the other way. You walk in, the piece stays on the counter, and it is measured, tested, and priced while you watch. The offer is itemized rather than delivered as one lump figure, so you can see which part is the metal, which part is the stones, and which part is the name on the clasp. Our luxury jewelry buyers in Los Angeles page covers the same work at the county level.

The rest of this page explains what no other buyer here puts in writing: why two pieces from the same house, in the same metal and with the same stones, routinely receive very different offers. If what you are bringing is plain karat gold rather than a fine piece, start instead with our page on selling gold in Santa Monica.

Why Two Identical Pieces Differ

How Ring Size and Fit Affect Fine Jewelry Values

Fine jewelry is resold to somebody who intends to wear it, so size and shape decide how large that audience is. A ring in the common middle of the size range suits a wide field of future owners. The same ring in a very small or very large size suits a narrow one, and a narrow field shows up in the number. That is the single largest reason two pieces from one house, in one metal, with the same stones, are quoted differently.

Bracelets behave the same way. One that adjusts, or whose removed links came home in the little envelope, fits nearly anyone. A rigid bangle sized to one wrist fits one wrist. Necklaces turn on length, and a chain shortened at some point cannot be returned to standard without added metal. Earrings turn on the backs, and a clip converted to a post years ago is a change the next owner inherits.

Brooches deserve an honest word. Almost nobody wears them now, so a brooch is the weakest form in modern fine jewelry no matter whose name is on the back. We still buy them, and we say plainly when one is worth more for its stones and metal than as a brooch. The same honesty applies whether you walked in with a Harry Winston ring or a piece carrying no signature at all.

The Metal You Think You Own

Sell Platinum, White Gold, and Palladium Jewelry

Most of the fine jewelry that reaches us from Santa Monica is set in a white metal, and sellers are frequently wrong about which one. Look for PLAT, PT950, 950 PLAT, or the older IRID PLAT mark for a platinum and iridium alloy. Palladium turns up as PD950 in mid-2000s pieces. White gold instead carries an ordinary karat mark, because it is gold with a white alloy and a thin rhodium coat.

That coat is why the confusion persists. Rhodium plating makes white gold look exactly like platinum until it wears through behind the shank or under a clasp, where a faint warm yellow shows. That is not damage and it changes nothing about what the piece contains. It simply reveals which metal you actually own, which is why we check for it in front of you rather than reading the mark alone.

Two facts surprise people. Platinum is denser than gold, so a platinum ring weighs noticeably more than the identical ring in gold, which means comparing weights across metals tells you nothing. And platinum last closed above gold in January 2015 and has traded under it since, so anyone who paid a premium for platinum at a retail counter is working from an assumption the market left behind a decade ago. We price each metal on its own market.

The Drawer Nobody Empties

Sell Single Earrings and Incomplete Jewelry Sets

The pieces most often left in a drawer are the incomplete ones. One earring whose partner vanished years ago. A bracelet from a suite whose necklace was given away. A three-piece set that is now a two-piece set. Bring it all. A single earring still holds its metal and its stones, and signed singles are regularly reunited on the resale side with a match that has been waiting.

Wear works the same way: some of it matters and most does not. Thin or splayed prongs, a shank worn down at the bottom, missing melee in a pave line, a stretched link, cracked enamel, a clasp that no longer holds. Those are real and we account for them out loud. Scratches, tangles, and a dull surface are not, and none of them reduce what the metal or the stones contain.

Please do not have anything repaired, polished, re-plated, or re-tipped first. Repairs are paid at retail rates and almost never return in the offer, and a heavy polish removes material and softens the crisp edges a buyer looks for. If a stone is loose, carry the piece in a pouch. And if some of what you are bringing is gold jewelry valued on weight rather than on a signature, we price both together in the same visit.

Signed or Unsigned, Whole or Partial

Designer and Estate Jewelry We Buy for Cash

Signed or unsigned, complete or partial, worn daily or untouched for decades. Every piece is evaluated on the counter and quoted line by line, alongside anything else you brought.

Sell Signed Designer Jewelry

Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Tiffany and Co., Bulgari, Buccellati, David Webb, Harry Winston and other fine houses. Boxes and papers are welcome but never required.

Sell Diamond and Bridal Rings

Engagement rings, eternity and anniversary bands, cocktail rings and solitaires, certified or not. Stones are priced separately from the mounting so you see both figures.

Sell Platinum and White Gold

Platinum, palladium and white gold mountings and bands, including unmarked pieces and ones worn thin. We identify the metal at the counter before we quote it.

Sell Singles and Partial Suites

Odd earrings, orphaned bracelets, incomplete suites, brooches and the leftovers of a collection. Bring the partial set rather than sorting it at home first.

Including the Row We Lose

South Bay Coin vs Other Santa Monica Jewelry Buyers

The Westside field splits into four kinds of buyer, and they differ most on where your jewelry sits while the decision is being made. Read the last row first, because it is the one a resale store wins.

Questions About Selling Luxury Jewelry in Santa Monica

Where can I sell luxury jewelry in Santa Monica?

Most Westside options are appointment offices, traveling buyers, or resale stores that keep your piece while it sells. South Bay Coin buys luxury jewelry outright at a Lawndale counter about twenty minutes away, with no appointment, an itemized offer, and payment the same visit you walk in.

Does resizing a ring lower what a jewelry buyer will pay?

A single clean resize by a competent bench almost never lowers the offer. What matters is the finished size and the state of the shank. A ring resized several times, or one with a thinned shank or a bulky addition at the bottom, narrows the audience of future owners and shows up in the number.

Will you buy a single earring if I lost the other one?

Yes, and you should bring it. A lone earring still contains its metal and its stones, which are valued exactly as they would be in a pair. Signed singles are also regularly matched back up on the resale side. An earring left in a drawer at home is worth nothing to you.

Is platinum jewelry worth more than gold jewelry?

Not automatically, and this surprises people. Platinum last closed above gold in January 2015 and has traded below it since. Platinum is also denser, so a platinum ring weighs more than the same ring in gold. Both metals are priced on their own markets rather than against each other.

How can I tell if my ring is platinum or white gold?

Check the inside of the band for PLAT, PT950, 950 PLAT, or an older IRID PLAT mark. White gold instead carries a karat number. A second clue is color: white gold is rhodium plated, and that plating wears through behind the shank, showing a faint warm yellow underneath.

Do I need the original box and papers to sell designer jewelry?

No. Bring them if you have them, since they help on the resale side, but they are not required and most pieces we see arrive without them. The jewelry itself carries the evidence we need. We will never decline a piece because the packaging was thrown out years ago.

Should I repair or polish jewelry before selling it?

Please do not. Repairs are paid at retail rates and almost never come back to you in the offer, and a heavy polish removes material and softens the crisp edges buyers look for. Bring the piece as it is. If a stone is loose, carry it in a pouch rather than wearing it.

Are brooches worth less than rings and bracelets?

Generally yes, because very few people wear brooches today, so demand for the form is thin regardless of the maker. We still buy them and often find the stones and metal carry the piece rather than the design. We tell you plainly which of the two is driving your offer.

Do you buy incomplete jewelry sets or only full suites?

We buy both. A full matching suite is easier to place and that is reflected in the offer, but a bracelet whose necklace is long gone is still a good piece on its own terms. Bring the partial set intact rather than deciding at home which items are worth showing us.

Do I need an appointment to sell luxury jewelry in Santa Monica?

No appointment is needed. Walk into 16916 Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale during business hours with a valid photo ID. Most visits run about fifteen minutes for a few pieces. You can also text photos of luxury jewelry to (310) 363-2697 beforehand if you would like a rough idea first.
