The Best Place to Sell Luxury Jewelry in Redondo Beach

If you want to sell luxury jewelry in Redondo Beach, the number that decides your offer is rarely the one stamped inside the band. On a signed ring built around a center stone, most of the value sits in the diamond, and the diamond is the part almost nobody in this market will explain out loud. South Bay Coin has graded stones and bought signed pieces since 1980, a short drive up Hawthorne Boulevard from the Riviera Village.

Redondo Beach is well served by fine jewelers. It is not well served by buyers. The jewelers around the Village design, repair and value pieces, several with real gemological credentials, but a valuation appointment is not a cash offer. The firms advertising for your designer pieces work by appointment, and several propose meeting at your bank, your office or your kitchen table. We keep a public counter instead, where sellers sell gold in Redondo Beach every week of the year.

Our appraisers are GIA trained, and South Bay Coin is a licensed, bonded and insured California dealer holding GIA, IWJG, JBT and NAWCC memberships, with a 5.0 star rating across more than 400 Google reviews. Every piece is quoted in front of you and itemized, whether you bring one solitaire or a folder of estate pieces. You are never asked to leave your jewelry, ship it anywhere, or wait on a committee. This page sits under our main luxury jewelry buying service, which covers the rest of Los Angeles County.

The Part Nobody Explains

How Much Is My Diamond Worth With a GIA or IGI Report?

Grading laboratories are not interchangeable, and that is the most useful thing a Redondo Beach seller can understand before comparing offers. GIA and AGS grade to a strict, consistently applied standard. Others, including IGI, the various EGL entities, and in-house reports written by retail stores, have historically graded more leniently, sometimes by a full grade or several on color and clarity.

That matters because the trade prices stones against the strict scale. The dealer who buys your diamond next will grade it that way, so we have to as well. When an offer lands under what a lenient report seems to promise, the cause is usually the gap between two grading standards rather than the buyer in front of you.

So we regrade at the counter. Loupe, master color comparison set, measurement, and a look at how the stone faces up, all in front of you with the reasoning said out loud. A strict report does raise our offer, because it lets us move the stone onward without an argument about grade. A lenient one is still worth bringing, since it carries the stone's history and often its measurements.

Four Checks, All of Them Visible

How to Match a Diamond Certificate to Your Ring

A grading report describes one specific diamond. Before it can affect an offer, we confirm that it describes the one in front of us. Four checks do that: the report number, often laser inscribed on the girdle in letters too small to read without magnification; the plotted clarity diagram, which maps internal characteristics like a fingerprint; the measurements and total depth; and the cut, polish and symmetry notes.

Papers and stones separate more often than people expect, and almost never for a sinister reason. A ring goes out for a resize and comes back. An estate is settled across several years and several folders. A center stone is upgraded on an anniversary while the original report stays in the safe. We run the checks because that is the job, not because anything is suspected.

Bring the whole folder even if it looks out of date. Old reports, sales receipts and past valuations all carry information, and none of them slow the visit down. If the paperwork turns out to describe a different stone, you will hear that at the counter with the evidence in front of you rather than after the fact.

Where the Money Actually Sits

What Total Carat Weight Means on a Diamond Ring

A mounted stone cannot be weighed. Nobody puts a set diamond on a scale, so a jeweler measures diameter and depth and runs a formula. That is why paperwork says approximately, and why two documents written on the same ring can disagree slightly. It is an honest estimate, but it is an estimate rather than a weight.

The estimate matters most near the round numbers. Diamond pricing steps up at the half and full carat marks, so a stone measuring a hair under a full carat prices in the band below, which a seller who has always called it a one carat ring hears as bad news rather than arithmetic. On multi-stone pieces, total carat weight or CTTW is every stone added together, melee included, so a two carat total halo can carry a center well under a carat.

We quote the center separately from the melee so you can see where the money sits before you decide anything. When the mounting outweighs the stones, we say so and price the piece as gold jewelry valued by weight instead, which is frequently the better result on a heavy band set with small stones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Selling Designer Jewelry and Diamonds

Is an IGI report the same as a GIA report?

No. Both are grading reports, but they are written to different standards. GIA and AGS grade strictly and consistently, while IGI has historically graded more leniently, so the same diamond can carry different color and clarity grades on each. The trade prices against the stricter scale, which is why offers differ.

Do I need a GIA report to sell luxury jewelry in Redondo Beach?

No. You can sell luxury jewelry in Redondo Beach with no paperwork at all, and most people do. Our GIA trained appraisers grade the stone at the counter while you watch. A strict report helps, because it makes the diamond easier to move onward, but its absence never stops a sale.

Why is your offer different from the appraisal I already have?

Two reasons, usually. Most appraisals state what replacing the piece at retail would cost, which is a different question from what it resells for. The second is grading. If the document came from a lenient laboratory, our stricter regrade changes the stone's description before any number is discussed.

How do you check that the diamond in my ring matches the certificate?

We check four things: the report number, often laser inscribed on the girdle and readable under magnification, the plotted clarity diagram that maps internal characteristics like a fingerprint, the measurements and total depth, and the cut and symmetry notes. All of it happens at the counter while you watch.

Can you tell the carat weight without removing the stone?

We can estimate it closely. A set diamond cannot be placed on a scale, so we measure diameter and depth and apply a standard formula. That is why paperwork says approximately. The estimate is reliable, but it matters most when a stone sits just under a half or full carat mark.

What does total carat weight mean on a diamond ring?

Total carat weight, often written CTTW, is every stone on the piece added together, including the small melee in a halo or along the band. It is not the size of the center stone. A ring described as two carats total can hold a center well under one carat.

Should I remove the diamond from the setting before I sell it?

No. Prying a stone out at home risks chipping the girdle and damaging the mounting, and it costs you the option of selling the piece intact to a buyer who wants it that way. Bring it as it is. If unmounting helps the valuation, we explain why first and let you decide.

Do you buy diamond jewelry with an old EGL certificate?

Yes. Older EGL reports were graded loosely enough that the trade discounts them, but the report still carries useful history and the diamond is still a diamond. We regrade the stone ourselves, show you what we find, and quote from that. Bring the paperwork along anyway.

Do you buy loose diamonds that are no longer in a setting?

Yes, and loose stones are the easiest to grade accurately, because we weigh them directly instead of estimating from measurements. We buy unmounted centers, stones removed during a remount, and diamonds whose paperwork went missing years ago. Bring any certificate you still have with them.

Do I need an appointment to sell luxury jewelry in Redondo Beach?

Never. Walk in during posted hours and a GIA trained appraiser will see you. Most buyers advertising to sell luxury jewelry in Redondo Beach work by appointment, or ask to meet at your home or bank. We keep a public counter in Lawndale, ten minutes up Hawthorne Boulevard.
