A Specialist, Not a Generalist

Where to Sell Silver Eagles in Los Angeles

If you want to sell Silver Eagles in Los Angeles, the most useful thing to know is that two Eagles with the same weight are not always the same coin. South Bay Coin is a licensed, bonded and insured California dealer at 16916 Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale, buying precious metals since 1980, which covers every year the American Silver Eagle has been struck.

Every Eagle holds one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, so the metal is the floor and never the whole answer. Three things separate one Eagle from the next: the finish it was struck in, whether it still has the box and certificate it left the Mint with, and the date and reverse design on the coin. A pawn counter tends to price every Silver Eagle as generic silver. We price each coin for what it actually is, and that is where a specialist earns a seller more than a generalist does.

Everything happens at the counter while you watch. We confirm each coin, read its mint mark and date, sort proofs and burnished issues from bullion strikes, and count tubes and monster boxes coin by coin. The evaluation is free and there is never pressure to sell. A single coin gets the same attention as five hundred, and sellers come to us from Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hawthorne and across Los Angeles County.

Many clients who sell American Silver Eagles bring other silver in the same trip. We also buy silver coins of every kind and silver bars and rounds, so a whole stack can be settled at one counter in one visit.

How We Value Your American Silver Eagles

How Much Is an American Silver Eagle Worth?

An American Silver Eagle is worth at least its one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, measured against the silver market on the day you sell. That floor applies to every Eagle ever struck. What lifts a coin above it is mostly the finish, and the United States Mint has struck this coin in four.

Bullion strikes, the coins sold through dealers in tubes and monster boxes, carry no mint mark and trade closest to their silver content. Proofs have mirror fields with frosted design details and a mint mark, S, P or W depending on the year. Burnished uncirculated Eagles, struck at West Point with a W, have a soft satin surface that is easy to mistake for bullion. Reverse proofs flip the proof look, frosted fields with a mirrored design, and came in special anniversary sets. Those three collector finishes usually carry a premium a plain bullion strike does not.

For the collector finishes, the packaging is part of the coin. A proof or burnished Eagle left the Mint in a sealed capsule, a presentation box and a certificate of authenticity, and the collector who eventually buys it expects all three. Bring them together even if the box is worn. Leave the coin in its capsule rather than opening it to look, because a fingerprint on a mirror field is permanent. Certification refines the number last: a coin graded by PCGS or NGC is valued on its certified grade as well as its silver.

The Date Is Part of the Coin

Type 1 vs Type 2 Silver Eagles and the 1776-2026 Proof

The date on a Silver Eagle also tells you which design it carries. From 1986 until mid-2021 the reverse showed a heraldic eagle behind a shield, the design now called Type 1. Partway through 2021 the Mint switched to an eagle coming in to land with an oak branch, called Type 2, refreshed the Walking Liberty obverse, and added an edge reeding variation to deter counterfeits. That makes 2021 the one year struck in both designs, so we read the reverse of every 2021 coin rather than going by the date alone.

2026 gives a second reason to read the date closely. The 2026-W Proof Silver Eagle, issued in the series' 40th anniversary year, is the first Eagle ever struck with two dates, 1776-2026, and it carries a small Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the number 250 for the nation's semiquincentennial. The proof Eagle in the Mint's 2026 Congratulations Set is a different coin: it was struck at Philadelphia and has neither the dual date nor the privy mark. Two proofs from the same year can sit side by side and still not be the same Eagle.

None of this asks you to sort anything at home. Bring every Eagle as it is, mixed years and finishes together, and we separate them at the counter and explain which ones stand apart. If the same box holds sterling, rounds or other bullion, everything you can sell as silver in Los Angeles crosses the same counter in the same visit.

Questions About Selling Silver Eagles in LA

Where can I sell American Silver Eagles in Los Angeles?

You can sell American Silver Eagles at South Bay Coin, 16916 Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale, serving Los Angeles County since 1980. Walk in Monday to Friday 10 AM to 5 PM or Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM, no appointment needed. Every coin is checked and counted in front of you, and you are paid the same visit.

How much is a Silver Eagle worth?

Every Silver Eagle is worth at least the value of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver on the day you sell it. Bullion strikes trade close to that figure. Proofs, burnished coins, reverse proofs, top certified grades and scarce dates can carry a collector premium above it, which is why we value each coin individually.

How can I tell if my Silver Eagle is a proof?

A proof Silver Eagle has mirror-like fields, frosted design details and a mint mark on the reverse, usually W, sometimes S or P. A bullion Eagle has no mint mark. A burnished Eagle also carries a W, but its finish is soft satin, not a mirror. Unsure? Bring it in and we will identify it free.

Do you buy proof Silver Eagles without the box or certificate?

Yes. We buy proof and burnished Silver Eagles with or without their original packaging. A coin that still has its capsule, Mint box and certificate of authenticity is the complete item collectors look for and is usually worth more, so bring whatever you still have, even a worn box. Please keep the coin sealed in its capsule.

What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagle?

Type 1 Silver Eagles, struck from 1986 to mid-2021, show a heraldic eagle with a shield on the reverse. Type 2 coins, struck from mid-2021 onward, show an eagle landing with an oak branch and add an edge reeding variation. The year 2021 was struck in both designs, so we check the reverse of every 2021 coin.

Do you buy Silver Eagle tubes and monster boxes?

Yes. We buy full mint tubes of 20, partial tubes and sealed 500-coin monster boxes, along with single coins, with no minimum and no maximum. Leave a sealed box sealed until you arrive. For a large lot, a quick call ahead helps us plan the count, and every coin is counted in front of you.

Are graded Silver Eagles worth more?

Often, yes. A Silver Eagle certified by PCGS or NGC is valued on its grade as well as its silver, and a top grade such as MS70 or PF70 can be worth considerably more than a raw coin of the same date. Bring graded Eagles in their original holders so the grade and label can be read exactly as issued.

Should I clean my Silver Eagles before selling them?

No. Never clean a Silver Eagle. Cleaning leaves fine hairline scratches and strips the original mint surface, which lowers the grade and the collector value, and it shows most on proofs. Handle coins by the edges, leave toning and spots as they are, and bring them in exactly as you found them. We evaluate every coin as it is.

How do you know if a Silver Eagle is real?

We check each Silver Eagle against the Mint's published specifications: weight on a calibrated scale, diameter and thickness, and the detail of the design and edge, and then we confirm the silver itself. A genuine Eagle holds one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Every check happens in front of you, so you see how each coin is confirmed.

Do I need an appointment to sell Silver Eagles in Los Angeles?

No appointment is needed to sell Silver Eagles at our Lawndale counter. Walk in during business hours and we will help you right away. If you are bringing a monster box or a large collection, a call ahead to (310) 363-7808 lets us prepare, but it is never required. Most visits take about 15 minutes.

Our Expertise

How We Value Your American Silver Eagles

Every American Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and was struck by the United States Mint at West Point, Philadelphia, or San Francisco. Because the design has been recognized worldwide since 1986, Eagles are simple to value accurately, which is exactly why a knowledgeable buyer can pay you more than a generalist.

We start with the silver content, then look closer. The mint mark below the eagle tells us whether you hold a standard bullion strike, a proof (P, S, or W), or a burnished uncirculated coin. Proofs and burnished Eagles carry a numismatic premium above their metal value, and certain low-mintage dates command strong collector demand among serious buyers.

Condition and certification matter too. A coin graded by PCGS or NGC, especially in MS70, can be worth far more than a raw example of the same date. We never clean coins or ask you to, because cleaning destroys original surfaces and collector value. If you also hold American Gold Eagles, we evaluate those with the same care.

FAQ

Common Questions About Selling Silver Eagles

You can sell American Silver Eagles in person at South Bay Coin in Lawndale, serving all of Los Angeles County. As a licensed dealer since 1980, we verify, weigh, and pay for your Eagles on the spot. Walk in with no appointment, or call ahead and text us photos first.

Yes. We buy proof Silver Eagles, reverse proofs, and burnished uncirculated issues, and we pay for the numismatic premium they carry above plain bullion. Proofs are identified by a P, S, or W mint mark below the eagle. Bring any original mint packaging or certificates if you still have them.

Look below the eagle on the reverse for a mint mark. A P, S, or W indicates a proof or special issue, while no mint mark usually means a standard bullion strike. Proofs also have mirror-like fields and frosted designs. If you are unsure, bring the coin in and we will identify it for free.

Absolutely. We buy sealed mint tubes of 20 coins, partial rolls, and full 500-coin monster boxes, along with any single Silver Eagles you have. There is no minimum or maximum quantity. We count and verify every coin in front of you, so bulk lots are handled quickly and transparently.

Most American Silver Eagles trade on their silver content, but certain low-mintage and key dates carry extra collector demand. Early proofs, special anniversary issues, and scarce years are examples buyers seek out. Condition matters too. Bring your coins in and we will tell you exactly which dates in your group stand out.

Often, yes. A Silver Eagle certified by PCGS or NGC, especially in a top grade like MS70, can be worth considerably more than a raw coin of the same year. The grading holder guarantees condition and authenticity. Bring graded Eagles in their original slabs so we can evaluate them properly.

No. Never clean Silver Eagles or any collectible coins. Cleaning leaves hairlines and removes the original mint surface, which lowers both the grade and the collector value. Even fingerprints can matter. Handle coins by the edges and leave them exactly as they are. We evaluate them in whatever condition you bring.

Our numismatists check weight, diameter, and design details, and we use professional testing to confirm purity and authenticity. Genuine Eagles contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and have precise specifications. We perform every check in front of you, so you can see exactly how we confirm your coins are real.

No appointment is necessary. Walk into our Lawndale showroom during business hours and we will help you right away. If you have a large collection or a monster box, a quick call ahead lets us prepare, but it is never required. Most visits are completed in about 15 minutes.

When you sell Silver Eagles to South Bay Coin, you get paid the same day, with no shipping, no waiting, and no risk of mailing coins to a stranger. Pawn shops often treat Eagles as generic silver and miss premiums. We are a specialist dealer who pays for what your coins truly are.
