It arrives from Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and the rest of Los Angeles County, sometimes worn every day for twenty years, sometimes untouched in a drawer since the retirement dinner it was given at. Every one of them is read in front of the person who owns it.

A Submariner is the most liquid watch most people will ever own. Somewhere there is a buyer for a steel Submariner at any hour of any day. Sellers usually hear that as a compliment about their taste. It is worth more than a compliment, because liquidity is the part of this transaction that belongs to you, and it is the part a quiet buyer is happiest to keep.

Any offer is what a buyer expects to realize minus what it costs to get there, and a large share of that cost is time. Money sits inside the watch. The right buyer has to appear. The market can move while the watch waits on a shelf. On an unusual piece, most of the distance between an offer and a shop window is that waiting. On a Submariner there is very little waiting to pay for. A watch that sells itself should not be priced as though it needs selling, and that is the sentence we are willing to be measured against.
