Why South Bay Coin

Where to Sell a Rolex Datejust in Los Angeles

If you want to sell a Rolex Datejust in Los Angeles, the shortest route is a counter that reads the watch in front of you and pays you before you leave. South Bay Coin has done that from the same Lawndale storefront since 1980, as a licensed, bonded and insured California dealer buying Rolex watches from clients across the South Bay and greater Los Angeles County.

The Datejust is the most widely owned Rolex in the world, and that cuts two ways for a seller. Demand is steady, so the watch is easy to place. It also means Rolex has built the Datejust in more combinations than any other model it makes, and two of them that look alike from across a room can be worth very different figures. A buyer working from the model name alone is working from the least specific thing about your watch.

We are not a mail-in desk and we are not a consignment service. We buy outright, at our own counter, with a specialist reading the reference and serial, the dial, the bezel and the bracelet while you are standing there. You hear which of those findings moved the figure and in which direction, and you are free to say no. Nothing is shipped, nothing is held, and there is no waiting period.

Whether you are here for one watch, for a Rolex sale in Los Angeles more broadly, for another luxury watch brand, or for designer jewelry and signed pieces, the evaluation is free and carries no obligation.

Datejust Valuation

How Much Is a Rolex Datejust Worth Today?

A Datejust is priced as a combination, not as a name. The same model has been offered in several case sizes from the 26mm and 28mm ladies' watches through 31mm, 36mm and 41mm, in steel, in two-tone Rolesor, and in solid yellow, white and Everose gold. On top of that sit the bezel choice, smooth, engine-turned, fluted or factory diamond set, and the bracelet choice, Oyster, Jubilee, President or a leather strap. Your watch is one point in that grid, and the grid is where the figure comes from.

Of all those variables, the dial has the widest spread. Two Datejusts of the same reference, the same metal and the same condition can land a long way apart because one carries an ordinary silver stick dial and the other carries a dial collectors ask for by name: the slate Roman dial known as the Wimbledon, a tapestry or linen pattern, a pie-pan or Buckley from the older references, mother-of-pearl, meteorite, or a factory diamond dial. That is why a photograph of the case back tells us far less than a clear photograph of the dial.

Condition is read separately from configuration. A crisp case, a bracelet that has not stretched, a full complement of links and a movement running within reason all support the offer. Wear that removed material, or parts that are no longer with the watch, pull it the other way. At the counter, a specialist reads the reference and serial, the dial, the bezel and the clasp with you present, says what each finding means, and then makes one offer you can take or leave.

Factory and Aftermarket Parts

What Aftermarket Diamonds Do to a Datejust Offer

The Datejust is the most customized watch Rolex makes. For decades, jewelers have taken plain steel and two-tone examples and added diamond bezels, diamond or pave dials, and non-Rolex bracelets and clasps. If that describes your watch, you should know before you walk in that the counter reads it as two things at once: a Rolex, and work done to a Rolex by somebody else.

Factory stone setting is part of the original configuration. Rolex selects and sets those stones in its own workshops, the dial layout and bezel are made for them, and the finished watch is a reference Rolex produced. Stones added later are a modification, however good the workmanship and however real the diamonds. The distinction is not snobbery, it is who buys the watch next. An original Datejust is compared against other original Datejusts; a customized one is compared against other customized ones, and its stones are then valued the way loose stones are valued, on size, quality and cut.

The practical result surprises people: money spent on a custom bezel rarely comes back at resale, and several national buyers publish large discounts for it. We do not publish a discount figure, because the honest answer depends on the base watch and the quality of the work. What we will do is buy the watch, say plainly which parts are Rolex and which are not, and price each side of that line where you can see it. We never decline a Datejust for being customized, and we do not set aftermarket stones ourselves.

What We Buy

Every Rolex Datejust We Buy for Cash

We buy the Datejust in every size, metal and condition, running or stopped, original or customized, with or without the box and papers.

Sell a Datejust 36 or 41

The classic steel Datejust on an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, smooth or fluted bezel, from the five-digit references through the current 41mm generation.

Sell a Two-Tone or Gold Datejust

Rolesor steel and gold watches plus solid 18k yellow, white and Everose examples. Gold content sets a floor under the offer, never a ceiling.

Sell a Lady-Datejust or Datejust 31

The 26mm, 28mm and 31mm watches, including factory diamond bezels, diamond hour markers and mother-of-pearl dials. Ladies' references are bought on the same terms.

Sell a Vintage or Custom Datejust

Four-digit references such as the 1601 and 1603, pie-pan and Buckley dials, and modern watches carrying aftermarket bezels, dials or bracelets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Selling a Rolex Datejust

Where can I sell my Rolex Datejust in Los Angeles?

South Bay Coin buys the Rolex Datejust at our Lawndale counter, minutes from Torrance, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. We are a licensed California dealer with a walk-in storefront, so your watch is read in front of you and paid for before you leave rather than shipped to a remote desk.

How much is my Rolex Datejust worth?

It depends on the combination rather than the model name. Case size, metal, bezel, bracelet and above all the dial set the range, then condition and originality place your watch inside it. A steel Datejust and a two-tone one of the same age can be far apart, which is why we read the watch itself.

Does a diamond bezel add value to a Rolex Datejust?

Only if Rolex set the stones. A factory diamond bezel is part of the original reference and is paid for as such. Diamonds added later by a jeweler are treated as a modification, and the stones are valued as stones rather than as Rolex parts, so the custom work usually returns less than it cost.

Do I need the box and papers to sell a Rolex Datejust?

No. We buy the Datejust with or without its original box and papers. A complete set helps, because it confirms how the watch was sold and makes it easier to place afterwards, but a watch on its own is evaluated and bought on exactly the same terms at our counter.

Do you buy a Lady-Datejust or a Datejust 31?

Yes. The 26mm, 28mm and 31mm watches are bought on the same terms as the larger sizes, including examples with factory diamond bezels, diamond hour markers and mother-of-pearl dials. Smaller Datejusts in two-tone and solid gold are a steady part of what crosses our counter each week.

Will you buy a two-tone or solid gold Datejust?

Yes. Rolesor two-tone and solid 18k yellow, white and Everose Datejusts are all bought here. The gold content puts a floor under the offer, but a Datejust is worth more as a watch than as metal, so these are always priced as watches first and never quoted as scrap.

Do you buy a Rolex Datejust that has stopped running?

Yes. A Datejust that runs slow, has stopped, or needs work is still bought. We account for the expected cost of putting it right rather than turning the watch away. Please do not have it serviced, cleaned or refinished first, since that spend rarely comes back in the offer.

Can I sell a vintage Datejust such as a 1601 or 16013?

Yes, and on older references originality carries more weight than anything else. Original dials, hands and bracelets matter, and unusual factory dials such as pie-pan or Buckley examples draw genuine collector interest. Bring the watch as it is and let a specialist look at it before anything is touched.

How long does it take to sell a Datejust at your counter?

Most visits take about 15 minutes from the first look to payment. Walk in without an appointment, let a specialist read the watch and explain the figure, and if you accept you are paid in cash or by check on the spot. Bring a valid photo ID.

Is it safe to sell a Rolex Datejust for cash in Los Angeles?

It is when the buyer is licensed and the sale happens in person. South Bay Coin has operated from the same Lawndale storefront since 1980 as a bonded and insured California dealer. Your watch never leaves the counter, the transaction is private, and payment is made once you accept.
