What a Sealed Assay Card Actually Proves
A PAMP bar ships inside a tamper-evident card, the CertiPAMP packaging that is the reason people say a bar is "in assay". The card carries the weight, the fineness, an authorized assayer's signature and a serial number. The bar itself carries that same serial. The card's whole job is to hold one written statement and one piece of metal together.
So a sealed card proves a pairing. It says this statement and this bar left Switzerland together and have not been apart since, which is why an intact card shortens a visit. What it does not prove is the bar. Printed packaging is the easiest part of any bullion product to copy, and counterfeit cards now circulate in the same laminated construction, with serials printed to match whatever is sealed inside. Published guides on spotting a fake card disagree on the details, and those details shift with each new generation of copy.
That is why we read the pair rather than the paper. The card is checked, the serial on the bar is checked against it, and the bar is confirmed on its own terms too, at the counter, in front of you. The honest half of that cuts the other way: because the card was never the proof, losing it does not lose you the value.
How a Card Gets Opened, and What It Costs You
Most opened cards were never really a decision. Two things do cost you something. Never tape, glue or reseal a card, because a repaired card raises a question an honestly empty hand does not. And never scratch, file or cut into a bar to prove to yourself it is solid. Our own rule runs the same direction: we do not cut a sealed card open without your say-so. If opening would settle a question faster, we ask first and the choice stays yours.
Not Every PAMP Bar Is a Gold Bar
PAMP has refined in Ticino, Switzerland since 1977 and was the first refiner to put a design on a bullion bar, which is why the veiled Lady Fortuna is the one bar image people recognize on sight. It is also why so many sellers are certain their bar is gold. The same Fortuna is issued in silver, platinum and palladium, and across a table a one ounce silver bar shows you the same picture as a one ounce gold one.
The answer is on the back, not the front. The reverse of a minted bar carries the weight, the fineness, the assayer's mark and the serial: 999.9 on a gold bar, 999 on silver, 999.5 on platinum. Sizes run from a single gram through 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 gram bars, the half ounce and the ounce, and up through cast bars to a kilo, with larger bars often carrying a separate certificate rather than a card.
Design series do not change any of that. Lunar year issues, the religious series and gift-boxed bars hold exactly the metal their reverse says they hold, and we price them as that metal.
