Bring pre-1965 dimes, quarters and half dollars to our Lawndale counter. The gap between the silver price and any counter offer is really a charge for waiting, and we own the part of that wait most buyers pay somebody else for.

Not Refined Metal Yet

Where to Sell Junk Silver in Los Angeles

South Bay Coin is a licensed, bonded and insured precious metals dealer in Lawndale, and the place to sell junk silver in Los Angeles without putting it in a box. Since 1980 we have counted pre-1965 dimes, quarters and half dollars across the same counter, for stackers arriving with full bags and for families who found a coffee can at the back of a closet in Torrance or Hawthorne.

Junk silver is the one thing people bring us that is not finished metal yet. A poured bar is done. A bag of circulated coins is silver alloyed with copper that still has a trip ahead of it before it becomes the refined product the public silver quote actually describes. That trip costs money, it costs time, and somebody carries the market between the day a bag is bought and the day the metal comes out the other end. That is the honest reason a counter offer and a silver chart do not match.

Most buyers charge for that wait because they do not own any of it. We do. South Bay Coin runs an in-house refinery and a retail counter under one roof, so our number is not set by another company's payment terms. When you sell silver in Los Angeles to us, or bring in gold and silver coins of any kind, you are dealing with the end of the chain rather than a stop along it.

Every bag is counted in front of you, the offer is explained before you are asked to decide, and nothing is weighed out of sight. There is no pressure and no fee for looking.

Why the Counter and the Chart Disagree

How Much Is Junk Silver Worth in Los Angeles?

Every junk silver offer starts from the same two facts: how much face value is in front of us, and what the silver market is doing while you stand there. From that figure a spread comes off, and sellers almost always read that spread as an opinion about their coins. It is not. It is the cost of the distance between a circulated coin and refined silver.

Work through what that distance contains. Somebody counts the lot and checks it. Somebody insures and moves it, and silver is heavy, so freight on a bag is real money rather than a rounding error. Somebody melts it, and a melt on alloyed coin is not the same job as a melt on clean bullion. Somebody refines the result to a deliverable fineness, and refiners run a queue like any other plant, taking the material they prefer first. Every one of those steps costs time, and for the whole of that time the buyer, not the seller, is holding silver at a price nobody can promise.

So the spread moves with the queue, and it moves in both directions. When the processing chain is quick and refiners are hungry for coin, offers on ninety percent silver tighten toward the quote. When the chain is backed up, the same bag is worth less to a buyer who has to wait longer to get paid for it. Nobody in Los Angeles explains this to a seller, which is why the first thing we do is name it.

Four Routes, Four Clocks

Where 90 Percent Silver Coins Go After You Sell Them

A bag of pre-1965 coins leaves a counter by one of four routes, and each route runs on its own clock. It can be shipped to an outside refiner and settled when that refiner settles. It can be sold on to a wholesaler, who then faces the same question one step later. It can be refined by the buyer, in the buyer's own plant. Or it can be kept as coins and sold to somebody who wants them as coins.

The route decides the wait, and the wait decides the offer. A buyer whose only route is the first one is pricing your coins against the longest clock in the trade, plus the payment terms of a company he does not control. That is true of most mail-in buybacks, and it is equally true of the local shop that quietly ships its silver somewhere else on Monday morning. Neither is dishonest. They are simply passing along a cost they cannot avoid.

South Bay Coin owns two of the four routes outright: the refinery and the retail counter. That is the whole argument of this page, and it is the reason our figure on junk silver tends to sit closer to the market than a buyer with one route can reach. Ask us which route your lot is taking. We will tell you, and the answer should change what you think the offer means.

The Coins That Skip the Queue

Sell Pre-1965 Silver Coins as Coins, Not as Scrap

Part of almost every bag never reaches a furnace at all. Circulated silver still sells as circulated silver, to collectors, to savers and to people buying a first tube of quarters over our retail counter in Lawndale. Those coins carry no waiting charge, because there is no wait attached to them. They go into the case rather than into a crucible.

This is why two honest buyers can look at one bag and arrive at different numbers without either of them lowballing you. A buyer who melts everything has to price the whole lot at the slowest speed in the chain. A buyer who sells part of it as coins is only waiting on the remainder. The larger our own retail side, the smaller the share of your bag that has to sit in a queue.

It also means sorting is our job, not yours. We separate what stays as coins from what goes to the plant, in front of you, and we say which pile a piece landed in and why. You are free to hold any of it back.

Selling Junk Silver in Los Angeles: Your Questions

Where can I sell junk silver in Los Angeles?

You can sell junk silver in Los Angeles at South Bay Coin, 16916 Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale, open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Walk in with any quantity of pre-1965 coins, watch the count, and leave paid the same visit.

How much is junk silver worth?

Junk silver is priced from its silver content against the live market. A dollar of face value in pre-1965 United States coins holds roughly 0.715 troy ounces of silver once circulation wear is allowed for, so the count is done in face value first, then converted and priced against the market that day.

What is junk silver?

Junk silver, also called constitutional silver, means circulated United States coins bought for their metal rather than for rarity. Dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 and earlier were struck in ninety percent silver. The word junk describes the absence of collector premium, not the quality of the coins.

Why is the offer lower than the silver price?

Because circulated coin is not refined silver yet. Counting, freight, insurance, melting and refining all take time, and whoever buys the bag carries the market for the whole of that wait. The spread pays for the waiting rather than judging your coins, and it tightens or widens as the processing chain behind it speeds up or slows down.

Do you buy 40 percent Kennedy half dollars and war nickels?

Yes. Kennedy halves dated 1965 through 1970 carry silver on a lower standard, and wartime nickels struck from 1942 through 1945 carry silver too, marked by the large mint letter above the dome on the reverse. Both are counted as their own separate groups here, never quietly lumped in with ninety percent coin.

Do I need to sort my silver coins before selling?

No. Sorting is our job and it happens at the counter while you watch. We pull the silver out of the clad, group the different standards, and set aside anything that will stay a coin rather than going to the refinery. You are welcome to keep any part of it back.

Is there a minimum amount of junk silver you buy?

There is no minimum. One silver dime is welcome and so is a full bank bag. Many mail-in buyers apply an order minimum before they will send a shipping kit, which is one of the reasons a small holding is usually better off crossing a counter here in the South Bay.

Do you buy Canadian and foreign silver coins?

Yes. Canadian coinage and other world silver were struck to their own standards rather than the United States ninety percent figure, so they are weighed and priced as their own group. Bring them in the same box. Separating them from the United States coins is part of the free count.

Should I clean my silver coins before selling them?

Please do not. Cleaning circulated silver strips the surface and can cost you the premium on anything that would otherwise have sold as a coin rather than as metal. Toning and grime make no difference at all to the silver content underneath, and they hide nothing that we need to see.

Do you buy silver dollars and sterling silver too?

Yes. Silver dollars sit on their own standard and are counted separately from a junk silver bag, and we also buy sterling silver flatware, hollowware and jewelry across the same counter. Bring the coins and the household silver together in one visit, and each group is named and valued on its own footing.
