How to Identify Your Gold Eagle Coins Before Selling
The American Gold Eagle was authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and has been struck since 1986, most of it at West Point. Four things on the coin itself decide which market it belongs in, and all four can be read without any equipment.
First, the mint mark. Bullion Eagles, the ordinary investment coins, carry none at all. A W on the coin points to a proof or burnished issue struck for collectors, which is a different market and often a different number. Second, the date format. Coins dated 1986 through 1991 use Roman numerals, so an Eagle reading MCMXC is simply a 1990 coin and not a rarity in itself.
Third, the reverse design. The series ran the family of eagles reverse from 1986 until partway through 2021, when a single eagle portrait replaced it, splitting that year into Type 1 and Type 2 coins. The gold content is identical, so bullion value does not move, but collectors track the split. Fourth, the size. Half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce Eagles are their own markets and frequently carry a stronger premium per ounce than the one ounce coin, which is why a mixed set should never be weighed as one lot.
