Why South Bay Coin

The Best Place to Sell Gold Coins in Redondo Beach

If you want to sell gold coins in Redondo Beach, the first question at the counter is not what they weigh. It is what they are. South Bay Coin has bought gold coins from a licensed, bonded and insured storefront since 1980, minutes inland from the Riviera Village, and nothing is priced here until it has been identified.

That order matters more with coins than with any other gold item, because a coin is the only form of gold that arrives covered in numbers. A face value, a date, a fineness, a weight in grams or grammes of pure gold. Not one of those numbers reliably tells you what the coin contains or what it is worth, and a buyer who reads them at face value gets the answer wrong in both directions.

We are a coin store first, with a resale platform for collector material, which is why it is worth our time to look closely at a common date instead of pooling it with the rest. Whether you are here to sell gold and silver coins from a long-held run or a single inherited double eagle, every piece is examined in front of you. If jewelry or scrap came along in the same box, you can sell gold in Redondo Beach on the same visit and take one offer covering all of it.

Valuation

How Much Are My Gold Coins Worth?

Every offer starts from actual gold weight, which is the quantity of pure gold a coin contains once its alloy is taken out of the total. That figure comes from published mint specifications, not from the stamp on the coin, and it is the reason two coins of the same diameter can hold different amounts of gold.

A one ounce bullion coin holds a full troy ounce of pure gold, but the coin itself is heavier than that whenever it is alloyed for hardness, so an American Gold Eagle and a Krugerrand both outweigh an ounce on the scale while a Canadian Maple Leaf does not. A Saint-Gaudens double eagle holds just under an ounce. A British Sovereign holds roughly a quarter of one, which surprises almost everyone who brings a handful in. Reading the scale alone, without knowing which coin is which, produces a number that is wrong before the market price is even applied.

Above that figure sits whatever collectors will pay for the specific piece: the series, the date, the mintmark, the strike quality and the state of preservation. Most gold coins that come across the counter are worth their gold and a modest premium. A few are worth considerably more, and those are the ones that vanish when a holding is weighed in bulk, which is precisely what happens at a counter that buys gold by the gram and sends it out. The same sorting applies if you also sell gold and silver bars from the same safe.

Identification

How to Identify Gold Coins Before You Sell Them

The face value is the number people trust most, and it is the one that carries the least information. A twenty dollar double eagle has not been worth twenty dollars since 1933. An American Gold Eagle says fifty dollars and holds an ounce of gold. A Krugerrand states no denomination at all, only its weight in fine gold, and a Mexican 50 Pesos states pesos on one side and the mass of pure gold on the other. The denomination is a legal artifact, not a price and not a weight.

The date is the second trap, because a great many world gold coins were struck for years or decades after the year printed on them. Mexico produced the 1947 dated 50 Pesos long past 1947. Austria did the same with its 1915 dated 100 Corona and its 1915 ducat, and Britain has restruck Sovereigns with older dates. A restrike contains exactly the gold its specification promises and sells easily, but it is bullion wearing a historic date rather than a scarce year, and anyone who paid a rarity premium for one paid it to the wrong person.

Fineness is the third. Ninety percent, twenty two karat and .9999 coins sit side by side in most holdings, and the purer coin is not automatically the heavier one. We read all three numbers against the published specification for that exact issue, then confirm the coin physically by diameter, thickness, weight and density before any of it counts.

Before You Come In

Storing and Handling Gold Coins Before You Sell

Gold does not rust, tarnish or corrode, so a gold coin is never damaged by time itself. It is damaged by what it has been sitting against. Soft plastic flips from the 1970s and 1980s can break down and leave a sticky green film on the surface. Cardboard two by two holders are closed with staples that scratch a rim when the coin is pushed in or pulled out. Adhesive album pages bond to the metal. Loose coins tipped into a jar or a coffee can rub each other every time the container moves.

Coastal storage accelerates all of it. A safe in a Redondo Beach garage or a closet near the water holds damp air, and that moisture works on the holders, the staples and the album glue rather than on the gold inside them. A holding that was put away sound in 1995 can come out with every coin intact and every holder failing.

The instruction is short. Bring the coins exactly as they sit, in whatever they are stored in, and let us open the holders at the counter while you watch. Do not pry a stuck coin loose, do not scrape residue, do not reach for solvent or polish, and do not sort or clean anything to make it presentable. A coin that arrives untouched keeps every option open. A coin that has been helped along has already lost some of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Selling Gold Coins in Redondo Beach

Where can I sell gold coins in Redondo Beach?

South Bay Coin buys gold coins from Redondo Beach sellers at our Lawndale counter on Hawthorne Boulevard, a short drive inland from Riviera Village and the pier. We have been a licensed California precious metals dealer since 1980, and walk-ins are welcome during business hours with no appointment.

How much are my gold coins worth?

Start with actual gold weight, the pure gold a coin contains, taken from published mint specifications rather than the number stamped on its face. That quantity is priced against the live market. Series, date, mintmark and condition can lift the figure further on coins collectors actively want.

Do you buy pre-1933 United States gold coins?

Yes. We buy Saint-Gaudens and Liberty Head double eagles, Indian Head eagles and quarter eagles, half eagles and gold dollars. Every piece is checked individually for date and mintmark, because branch mint issues carry premiums that disappear when a holding is priced as one bulk weight.

Do you buy Krugerrands, Gold Eagles and Maple Leafs?

Yes, in any quantity, single coins included. We buy American Gold Eagles and Buffalos, South African Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, British Sovereigns, Mexican 50 Pesos, French Roosters and Swiss Helvetias. Proof issues and coins sealed in original mint packaging are welcome too.

Do you buy fractional gold coins?

Yes. Half, quarter and tenth ounce coins are all bought here. Fractional pieces cost more per ounce to produce, so they often carry a stronger premium relative to the gold inside them than one ounce coins do. We price them individually instead of pooling them by weight.

Is my 1947 Mexican 50 Pesos coin a restrike?

Almost certainly, because Mexico struck that date for decades afterward, and Austria did the same with the 1915 dated 100 Corona and ducat. A restrike holds exactly the gold its specification promises and sells readily. It is bullion carrying a historic date, not a scarce year.

Should I clean my gold coins before selling them?

No. Polish, cloths and ultrasonic baths leave microscopic scratches that graders recognize immediately, and a cleaned coin loses any collector premium it had. Gold does not tarnish, so there is nothing worth removing in the first place. Bring the coins exactly as you found them.

My gold coins are stuck in old plastic flips. What should I do?

Bring them as they are. Soft plastic holders can break down over decades and leave a green film on the surface, and prying a coin free or scraping at residue causes exactly the damage you are trying to avoid. We open holders at the counter with you watching.

Do I need an appointment to sell gold coins in Redondo Beach?

No appointment is needed. Walk in Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM, or Saturday, 10 AM to 3 PM. The drive from Redondo Beach takes minutes up Hawthorne Boulevard. Bring valid photo identification, which California law requires on precious metals transactions.

What should I bring when I sell gold coins?

Bring the coins in their current holders, along with any tubes, capsules, albums or mint boxes they arrived in, plus valid photo identification. Old certificates, dealer receipts and inventory lists help us identify pieces faster. Leave everything as it sits, because sorting happens at the counter.
