Where to Sell Gold Bars in Long Beach

Deciding where to sell gold bars in Long Beach comes down to a question most buyers never answer out loud: which number are they paying on. A bullion bar carries two independent figures, its weight and its fineness, and only the product of the two is gold. A shop that quotes a bar without naming either is asking you to take the arithmetic on faith. Since 1980 we have bought bullion over one counter in Lawndale, and every bar is read, weighed, and converted to fine gold content while you watch.

We own and operate our own refinery, which matters more on bars than on almost anything else that crosses our counter, because a buyer who only resells has to build a resale margin into your number first. We are also a full coin store, so anything numismatic gets priced on that basis instead of being swept into the same pile. Sellers who came to sell gold in Long Beach often arrive with bars, coins, and odd pieces together, and all three are handled in one visit.

Long Beach sits about twenty-five minutes from our Hawthorne Boulevard showroom on the 405. We are open Monday through Saturday with no appointment and nothing shipped, every offer is free, and you are welcome to hear the number and walk out with your bars. We are a licensed, bonded, and insured California gold dealer holding GIA, IWJG, JBT, and NAWCC memberships, and we buy gold and silver bars of every size and refiner.

How Bars Are Valued

What Does the Fineness Mark on a Gold Bar Mean?

Every bullion bar carries a fineness, written in parts per thousand. A bar marked 999.9 is 999.9 parts gold in every thousand. A bar marked 999 is three nines. A bar marked 995 is the lowest fineness the London wholesale market accepts for a large gold bar, and it has been that way for decades. Sellers regularly bring us a 995 bar convinced something is wrong with it. Nothing is. What changes is the arithmetic, not the honesty of the bar.

That arithmetic is the part worth learning. Fine gold content is gross weight multiplied by fineness, and on many bars those are two separately stamped numbers rather than one. Small minted bars collapse them neatly, so a bar sold as one troy ounce at 999.9 holds essentially a troy ounce of gold. Larger cast bars do not. The London rules require fineness to four significant figures and discourage relying on a stamped weight, because bars are re-weighed on arrival. Anyone selling a ten ounce bar should expect it weighed rather than read.

Karat marks turn up on bar-shaped gold too. A piece stamped 916 is 22 karat, 750 is 18 karat, 585 is 14 karat. Bar-shaped gold sold through jewelry channels overseas is very often 916 rather than 999, and Long Beach families bring these in constantly. They are entirely real gold. They simply hold about twenty-two parts gold in twenty-four, and the offer follows content rather than shape. Where a piece carries a karat mark on one face and a metric weight on the other, both figures are converted in front of you before any number is written down.

Reading Your Bar

How to Read the Stamps on a Gold Bar

A cast bullion bar made to wholesale standard carries four marks: the refiner's stamp, the fineness, a serial number, and, on bars cast from 1988 onward, the year of manufacture. Minted retail bars vary more, and most show the refiner, the weight, and the fineness. Knowing which four to look for turns a bar into a document you can partly read yourself before handing it across a counter. A bar showing only two of the four is not automatically suspect. It is simply a bar that has to be read at a counter rather than from a photograph.

One family of stamps exists to be misread. Bar-shaped novelty pieces are sold with wording such as 100 mills .999 gold, gold layered, or gold clad. The fineness figure on those describes a surface coating, not the bar underneath, which is ordinary base metal. They arrive in gift boxes and inherited lots all over Long Beach, they photograph exactly like bullion, and the seller is usually the last to find out. We identify them free of charge and say so plainly. If your box also holds bullion coins, those are separated out so you can sell gold coins in the same visit.

The last thing to understand is that a fineness mark is a claim made by whoever cut the die. It is verified rather than trusted, and that verification is quick and harmless to the bar. It runs the other way too: a bar whose stamps have worn shallow or gone partly illegible still gets paid on tested content rather than on how crisp the lettering is. Nothing needs polishing, straightening or cleaning before you bring it in.

Common Questions About Selling Gold Bars in Long Beach

What does 999.9 mean on a gold bar?

Fineness is written in parts per thousand. A bar stamped 999.9 contains 999.9 parts gold in every thousand parts of metal, often called four nines. A bar stamped 999 is three nines. The mark describes purity only. It says nothing about how much the bar weighs, which is a separate number entirely.

Is a 995 fine gold bar worth less than a 999.9 bar?

Not per unit of gold. A 995 bar simply holds slightly less gold for the same gross weight, so its fine content is a little lower and the offer follows that content. A 995 bar is a legitimate wholesale grade, not a defect, and it is the accepted minimum for large London market gold bars.

How do you work out the fine gold content of a gold bar?

Fine gold content is gross weight multiplied by fineness. We weigh the gold bar on a calibrated scale rather than reading the stamped weight, confirm the fineness, and multiply. On small minted bars the two numbers usually match closely. On larger cast bars they can differ, which is exactly why the bar gets weighed.

How much is my gold bar worth?

A gold bar is worth its fine gold content priced against the live market, meaning its verified weight multiplied by its verified fineness. We pay on the gold in the bar rather than on the stamped gross weight, because paying a 916 or 995 bar as though it were pure would be wrong in your favor rather than ours.

Are 100 mills .999 gold bars real gold?

No. Wording such as 100 mills, gold layered, or gold clad describes a thin gold surface applied over base metal. The fineness figure refers to that coating, not to the bar. These are novelty items rather than bullion. Bring yours in and we will identify it free, whether or not you sell anything.

Can I sell a 22K or 916 gold bar in Long Beach?

Yes. A 916 mark means 22 karat, which is genuine gold at a lower fineness than bullion bars. Bar-shaped 22K gold bought through jewelry channels overseas is common in Long Beach households. We buy it, price it on its gold content, and never treat a karat mark as a reason to decline a piece.

What marks should be on a genuine gold bar?

A cast bar made to wholesale standard carries the refiner's stamp, the fineness, a serial number, and, on bars cast from 1988 onward, the year of manufacture. Minted retail bars usually show the refiner, weight, and fineness. Marks are a starting point for identification, never proof on their own.

Do you buy gold bars from refiners nobody has heard of?

Yes. An unfamiliar refiner name is not a reason to decline a gold bar. We verify the metal rather than the reputation of the die, so a bar from a small or long-closed refinery is bought on the same basis as anything else once its fineness and weight are confirmed at the counter.

Do I need an appointment to sell gold bars near Long Beach?

No. Walk into our Lawndale showroom Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, or Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. There is no booking form and no waiting for a callback. Bring a valid government photo ID, which California requires of any licensed precious metals dealer.
