Forty Years of Eagles, and Why They Do Not All Look Alike
The ounce has never moved. Since the series began, a 1 oz Gold Eagle has carried one full troy ounce of gold. That is the one thing nothing has changed. Almost everything else has.
The reverse was redesigned partway through the run, so coins a few years apart show different birds. A few issues carry an added device beside the date, the first marking a wartime anniversary. In the anniversary year now being struck, a second date and a small bell device appear on collector versions. The Mint also changed how its master dies are made, sharpening detail on newer strikes.
Here an honest answer beats a confident one. National sellers and price guides do not agree about which of these features reached which coins, or when the die change took effect. Some put the added devices on collector issues only, others on the plain bullion coin, and one reference page names the wrong war for the earlier device. That is settled by reading the coin in your hand, not from a chart.
None of it changes the gold. An unfamiliar Eagle is not worth less for being unfamiliar, and never a reason to clean or discard anything. What it can be is worth more than the rest of the stack, decided by looking rather than assuming.
