Why South Bay Coin

The Best Place to Sell Gold Coins Near Venice Beach

To sell gold coins in Venice Beach for what they are actually worth, you need a buyer who reads them as coins first and as metal second. South Bay Coin has bought gold coins from Westside clients since 1980 from a licensed, bonded, and insured storefront on Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale.

We own our refinery, and that changes the math on every offer we write. Pawn shops and jewelry stores resell your coins to a refiner or wholesaler at a markup, and that middle layer comes out of your payout. We are the end of that chain rather than a stop along it, which is why clients who want to sell gold coins in Los Angeles drive past closer shops to reach our counter.

Owning a refinery is only half of it. A refinery on its own values every coin at melt, and melt is the floor, never the ceiling. We run a coin store with a working resale platform behind it, so a scarce date, a mintmark, or an uncommon foreign issue gets paid as a collector piece instead of going into the melt bin.

Venice sellers arrive with an unusually mixed inventory: bullion bought during the 1980s, gold carried home from travel or sent by family abroad, and inherited boxes unopened in thirty years. We handle all of it, tested and explained at the counter, with no pressure to sell. Our appraisers hold GIA credentials, and the shop carries IWJG, JBT, and NAWCC memberships. Clients closer to the water often reach us through our page for gold buyers serving Marina del Rey and Venice.

How Much Are Your Gold Coins Worth?

Every gold coin carries two numbers. The first is its gold content, calculated from actual gold weight and the live spot price. The second is what collectors will pay above that for a particular date, mint, or grade. We work out both and pay whichever is higher, which is the part most sellers never see explained.

Actual gold weight is where most people miscount. A coin's stated size is not the same as the gold inside it. Circulating coinage was alloyed with copper to survive decades in pockets and tills, so most historic issues run .900 fine rather than the .9999 fineness of modern bullion. Wear almost never reduces gold content in a way that matters, and face value tells you nothing at all.

Authentication comes next, and we layer it. XRF analysis reads metal composition without touching the surface. Weight and diameter are checked against published mint specifications, since counterfeits are harder to match on both at once. Specific gravity settles anything still uncertain. Nothing is filed, cut, or acid tested, and you watch every step from the other side of the counter.

Our Specialty

Selling Foreign and World Gold Coins on the Westside

Venice has absorbed a century of arrivals from everywhere, and the coins that reach our counter from this neighborhood show it. British Sovereigns, French and Swiss 20 Franc pieces, Mexican 50 Pesos, Austrian and Hungarian Coronas, Dutch Ducats, Krugerrands, and Maple Leafs all turn up in inherited boxes and safe deposit envelopes. Most local buyers weigh these as scrap because they cannot identify them. We identify each issue by hand.

Foreign denominations are not round troy weights, which is the trap. A Mexican 50 Pesos holds just over one and a fifth troy ounces of gold. A full Sovereign holds a little under a quarter ounce. A 20 Franc Rooster holds less than a fifth. Sellers routinely assume a thick, impressive foreign coin contains a full ounce. We show the published specification beside the scale reading so the arithmetic is visible.

Restrikes matter just as much. Austria, Hungary, and Mexico officially restruck their most popular gold coins for decades using the original dates, so a coin dated 1915 may have left the mint in the 1960s. Restrikes trade essentially as bullion, while genuine original strikes in strong condition can carry a real premium. The same discipline applies when you sell silver coins from a mixed foreign collection.

The Westside has plenty of places to hand over a gold coin. Few can identify a foreign issue, and fewer still will pay more than melt for one.

Questions About Selling Gold Coins in Venice Beach

South Bay Coin buys gold coins from Venice Beach sellers at our Lawndale storefront on Hawthorne Blvd, a short drive south of the neighborhood. Walk in without an appointment during business hours, or text photos first. We are licensed, bonded, and insured, and we have bought coins from Westside clients since 1980.

Every gold coin has two possible values. The first is melt value, set by its actual gold weight and the live spot price. The second is collector value, set by date, mintmark, strike, and condition. We calculate both and pay whichever comes out higher, after a free appraisal at the counter.

Yes. British Sovereigns, French and Swiss 20 Franc pieces, Mexican 50 Pesos, Austrian and Hungarian Coronas, Dutch Ducats, Krugerrands, and Maple Leafs are all coins we buy regularly. Foreign gold is one of our strongest categories, and we identify and weigh each issue in house rather than treating it as scrap.

Melt value is what the raw gold inside a coin is worth at the current spot price. Numismatic value is what collectors will pay above that figure for a specific date, mint, or grade. Melt is the floor under every gold coin. Numismatic value is whatever stacks on top of that floor.

No appointment is needed. Walk into our Lawndale showroom Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, or Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Most visits take about fifteen minutes. If you are bringing an entire collection, calling ahead lets us set aside enough counter time for it.

No. Cleaning a gold coin leaves hairlines and dulls the original surface, and that damage can erase whatever collector premium the coin carried. Dealers and grading services both spot it instantly and it cannot be undone. Bring your coins exactly as you found them, including toning, envelope dust, and all.

Usually, yes. Austria, Hungary, and Mexico officially restruck popular gold coins for decades using the original dates, so a coin dated 1915 may have been minted far later. Restrikes trade essentially as bullion. Genuine original strikes in strong condition can carry a collector premium above their gold content.

Yes, and we verify them. Certification numbers are checked against the grading service database, and the holder itself is inspected, because counterfeit slabs do exist. A verified high grade coin is worth considerably more than the same date raw, so leave slabbed coins sealed inside their holders when you visit.

We layer several non destructive tests. XRF analysis reads metal composition, weight and diameter are checked against published mint specifications, specific gravity settles anything still uncertain, and strike detail and edge lettering get a visual inspection. Nothing is cut, filed, or acid tested, and you watch every step.

Bring your coins and a valid government photo ID, which California law requires for precious metals transactions. Original tubes, flips, holders, and any purchase paperwork help but are not required. Leave sealed bullion tubes sealed. We pay cash or check the same day you accept an offer.
