The Best Place to Sell Silver Eagles in Los Angeles
When you sell American Silver Eagles, you are holding the most widely traded silver bullion coin in the country. Every serious dealer in Los Angeles recognizes it on sight, which means you should never have to accept a bulk scrap rate for it. South Bay Coin has been buying Eagles across the counter at 16916 Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale since the U.S. Mint introduced the series, and we price them against the live silver market while you watch.
We are a coin store with our own refinery, and that combination matters here. Refiners see a tube of Eagles as raw metal. Coin shops that do not refine have to send common-date bullion somewhere else before they see a return. We can pay on the metal or pay on the coin, whichever is worth more to you, because both channels are ours. A worn common-date Eagle is valued on its ounce of fine silver. A sealed proof, a low-mintage date, or a strong graded example is valued as the collectible it actually is.
Sellers drive to us from Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, Long Beach, and across LA County, often after calling several buyers first. Bring the whole holding in one trip, including the rest of the stack. We also buy silver and gold coins of every era, silver bullion bars from all recognized refiners, and sterling silver, and you can settle all of it on one visit and one payment.

What Makes One Silver Eagle Worth More Than Another
Every Eagle carries the same troy ounce of .999 fine silver, so the metal is never the interesting part. What separates one coin from the next is finish, completeness, and date. The Mint has issued the series in four finishes: the plain bullion strike that most stacks are built from, the proof with its mirrored fields, the burnished uncirculated issue struck at West Point, and the occasional reverse proof released in anniversary and special sets. Bullion coins are valued on the metal plus the trading premium the market gives Eagles over generic rounds. The other three are valued as collectibles, and there the packaging carries real weight.
That is why we ask you to bring proofs and burnished coins exactly as you have them. The original Mint box, the outer sleeve, and the certificate of authenticity are part of the item, not paperwork you can leave at home. Leave coins sealed in their capsules as well. A fingerprint on a mirrored proof field is permanent, and wiping it makes it worse rather than better. Sellers across Los Angeles routinely arrive with the coin and none of its original packaging, and the difference in what we can pay is avoidable.
Date matters in narrower ways than most sellers expect. The 2021 issue is the one to check first, because the Mint changed the reverse design partway through that year, creating a Type 1 heraldic eagle and a Type 2 eagle in flight within a single date. Early proofs, anniversary set issues, and a small number of low-mintage years also trade clear of the pack. We check date, mintmark, and finish on every coin rather than counting the stack and quoting a flat number per ounce.

South Bay Coin vs. Other Silver Eagle Buyers

What Our Customers Say
Common Questions About Selling Silver Eagles
Each coin holds one troy ounce of fine silver, so the live silver market sets the floor. Above that floor, Eagles trade at a premium to generic rounds, and proofs, burnished issues, key dates, and strong graded examples carry more. We quote against the market the day you visit.
Yes. We buy single coins, mint tubes of twenty, partial rolls, and full monster boxes of five hundred, sealed or already opened. Large lots need no appointment and no advance notice. A sealed box still gets counted and verified with you present before any payment changes hands.
Usually yes. Proofs and burnished West Point issues are struck for collectors in far smaller numbers than the bullion coin, so they are priced as collectibles rather than as metal. How much more depends on the year, the finish, the condition of the mirrored surfaces, and whether the original packaging is intact.
We will buy the coin either way, but the original Mint box, sleeve, and certificate of authenticity are part of the item and they affect the offer. Bring them if you still have them, even loose in a bag. Leave the coin sealed inside its capsule rather than handling it.
The Mint replaced the heraldic eagle reverse partway through 2021, so that year exists in two distinct designs. Collector demand between them shifts over time and can differ by finish and grade. We check the reverse on every 2021 coin rather than treating the date as one lot, and price each type on current demand.
For most common-date coins, no. Grading fees and the wait rarely pay for themselves on ordinary bullion strikes, and a top grade is not guaranteed. Already graded coins keep their value with us. Bring raw coins in first and we will tell you honestly whether submission is worth considering.
Not on the metal. The silver content of a spotted or toned coin is unchanged, so the melt floor holds. Spotting can affect what a collector will pay above that floor on higher grade coins. Please do not attempt to clean or polish them, since cleaning does more damage than the spots.
The Eagle is struck to a fixed weight, diameter, and thickness, so counterfeits usually fail a precise scale and caliper check before anything else. We confirm with metal testing and holder inspection where relevant, and we do it at the counter where you can see it rather than in a back room.
A short list of years outruns the series, including early proofs, anniversary set issues, the reverse design variety within 2021, and a handful of low-mintage dates. Demand shifts, so we check dates and mintmarks on arrival instead of working from a fixed list. Sort nothing before you visit us.
No. Walk into our Lawndale showroom during business hours, Monday through Friday or on Saturday, and bring valid photo identification. Sellers come to us from Torrance, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, and across LA County. For a very large holding, a quick call ahead helps us have payment ready.
